Peter's House

The house of Peter is definitely a must for any pilgrimage to Israel. Located in Capernaum, Peter's house is the location where Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law (Matthew 8:14 and Mark 1:29-31) and was built during the 1st century BC. It was a simple home similar to the others that have been discovered by archaeologists in this tiny farming and fishing village. Over the years visitors left inscriptions on the walls (about 131) with varying messages and symbols. In the middle of the 4th century a large church was built around Peter's house. Not too long ago a more modern church was erected as well. Not only is St. Peter's house a wonderful site because of its close connection to Jesus and one of his disciples, but you can see many other important sites including the Greek Orthodox Church of Capernaum with its red dome.
